DSE212 Revision Weekend Details
The OUPS DSE212 Revision Weekend offers you comprehensive coverage of everything you need to help you gain better grades in your DSE212 exam, covering all exam chapters plus advice on 'how to revise' and exam techniques. It will also help you to see how the course fits together and how some of the chapters link together, allowing you to construct informed and intelligent answers to the exam questions. The sessions will give you the confidence to take on your own revision and go into the exam room well prepared.
Topics to be covered will include (some sessions will be held in parallel):
- Biological perspectives on the whole course and the comparative approach to learning
- Perspectives
- The cognitive perspective as illustrated by learning
- The social perspective as illustrated by learning
- Perception, attention
- Personality
- Psychoanalytic and Humanistic
- Psychology of sex and gender
- Language
- Lifespan development
- Revising DSE212, using the Nature and Nurture theme (overview of the course)
- Tackling the Exam
Extensive handouts will be given on each of these lectures. These handouts are available exclusively to those attending the weekend.
The three lecturers will be Professor Frederick Toates, Dr Graham Edgar and Dr Graham Mitchell. They are all very experienced tutors and they are expert in providing clear explanations of the course content. Even the most complex of concepts is easily understood after listening to them!! Fred and Graham Edgar are both authors of chapters in DSE212 .
- Professor Frederick Toates is Professor of Biological Psychology at the Open University, where he has over 33 years experience of teaching and tutoring. An author on many OU courses, including DSE212, DSE141 and SD226, his most recent book is Biological Psychology (3rd edition, Pearson Education, Harlow), which forms a popular and recommended text in a number of universities throughout the world. His book on B.F. Skinner has also recently been published. Fred has taught undergraduate classes not only in the UK but also in Moldova, Romania, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the USA. Many of you will know Professor Toates from his involvement in the student forums, where he often provides very helpful and timely explanations in response to students' queries.
- Dr Graham Edgar has been a tutor with the OU for many years and is a regular contributor to OUPS weekends. He is the author of the Perception & Attention chapter in DSE212. He is also Reader in Psychology at the University of Gloucester where he works in the general area of cognitive psychology, with particular interests in the areas of perception and situation awareness (SA). Current research includes studies of driver behaviour and the development of techniques for measuring SA, including measuring brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG)..
- Dr Graham Mitchell is another very experienced tutor on DSE212. Graham is a Biological Psychologist by training. He is a qualified teacher, a graduate psychologist and a chartered biologist. At The University of Northampton he teaches undergraduate Biological Psychology, Educational Psychology and Positive Psychology. At post-graduate level he teaches on the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health course as well as Health and PGCE courses. His research interests lie in the area of Positive Psychology and self-belief with its effects on academic achievement and health. He is currently researching into the development of resilience in children and adults.
As well as taking taking a number of lectures over the weekend Graham Mitchell will be available to carry out one-to-one sessions with students who have specific queries or who are struggling with particular aspects of the course. He is also able to give excellent advice on revision and exam techniques:
