Yorks & Lancs Overview Day and Statistics Day School 2012

YORKSHIRE & LANCASHIRE OUPS

Yorks & Lancs OUPS are currently gearing up for their sixth annual events day:

March 24th 2012, Leeds Metropolitan University, 10am-4pm.

Please scroll down below for details on this year's events.

YORKS & LANCS DD307 OVERVIEW DAY: SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Tutor: OU Associate Lecturer Phil Hulme

As previous students will know, DD307 tackles current social psychological debates head-on, and students have to engage with some broad philosophical concepts as a way of getting to grips with the course material.

Before we ran this event, we asked previous students for their opinion about what a DD307 overview day should cover. Key issues seemed to be how the interrogative themes and psychological perspectives mesh together, and how to understand the debate between mainstream psychology and current critical approaches. Another key issue was how to get going with the Project Proposal – something which can feel daunting at the outset of the course.Tutor Phil Hulme concentrates on these key issues, giving a tour of the perspectives, interrogative themes and the course Project. Phil is also an exam marker, and includes a section on preparing for the exam.

To give students confidence in approaching the project, the day also includes a session on interviewing techniques, focused firmly on the course project options. This gives students an opportunity to air any individual concerns about the project, and provides a chance to look over the supplementary material provided by the OU to get a head start on their project choices. This session is run by Phil and a psychology postgraduate who originally studied with the OU and who now works as an interviewer, qualitative analyst and undergraduate project supervisor.

The day is intended to be relaxed and friendly, to encourage talking (both with Phil and between students), and to provide a comfortable atmosphere in which any concerns about the course can be aired.

If you are about to embark on DD307, we will be running this event at Leeds Metropolitan University on 24th March 2012. The cost will be £20 for OUPS members and £25 for non members.

YORKS & LANCS STATISTICS DAY SCHOOL
Tutor: OU Associate Lecturer Simon J. Davies

However you feel about statistics and writing up psychology experiments, you will need to tackle this at some point in your degree, and a basic knowledge of statistical techniques may well help you to get your first job if you want to work in psychology. The basic concepts behind statistics are easier to understand than you might think, and the Yorks & Lancs Statistics Day School will help you to tackle your statistics assignments with more confidence. It is ideal for students on DSE212 Exploring Psychology or DD303 Cognitive Psychology, or any other undergraduate-level psychology course involving statistics-based assignments.

OU tutor Simon J. Davies will be explaining what experimental research methods and statistics are and why we use them, looking at the basic concepts behind experimental design, probability and statistical significance. He will introduce students to the statistics package SPSS, including data entry and producing graphs and descriptive statistics – this will be shown on-screen by the tutor only, and students will not be required to work on SPSS on an individual computer. Simon will also take students through two basic statistical tests: the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).

The Stats Day school will run at Leeds Metropolitan University on March 24th, from 10am until 4pm. The cost will be £20 for OUPS members and £25 for non-members.

On-line bookings are now open. Please click here to book online. Alternatively, you can book your place at any time by contacting Alison or Kerry at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
