Summer Weekend

OUPS Mini Summer Schools (Summer Weekend): ED209, DD307, SD226

6th - 8th July 2012: Warwick University

Bookings are now open!

Don’t miss out on that Summer School experience if you are studying ED209, DD307 or SD226 this year. The OUPS mini Summer Schools give you the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a Summer School experience, in the form of a residential weekend, for those courses for which the OU does not offer a Summer School. At approximately the halfway point of your course it is the ideal time to start looking at links and themes and think about how the whole course fits together. Many students have said that this weekend helps them suddenly understand what the course is all about as it all clicks into place.

Don't leave it until revision time to fully understand the course! It is so important to get to grips with the course material early in the course to help you with your TMAs and give you a good foundation for when you start your revision, when your increased understanding will make your revision so much easier.

What does the weekend offer?

A weekend of discussions, seminars and lectures aim to offer a broad look at the topics covered on the course, providing you with conceptual overviews, identifying major themes and links and generally helping to pull the course together and bring it to life. All three of these mini Summer School courses offer a full programme of nine talks, running from Friday evening (registration from 3pm; dinner at 6pm and evening lecture at 8pm) until Sunday tea time (last lecture finishes at 3pm). As well as covering course related topics and study skills, the sessions also allow students the opportunity of acquiring a better understanding and overview of the course as a whole and discussing any difficulties with the tutors. In addition it is a chance to meet up with other students studying your course.

Tutors on the weekend are all highly experienced and often include course writers and exam markers. Details of the tutors for each course as well as further information on individual programmes will be released when they are finalised.

In parallel to these mini summer schools we hold our Annual Conference, which covers a different topic every year. This is a great opportunity to hear a number of speakers of international and national standing.  If you book onto the weekend you are welcome to choose to attend some of the conference talks as well. However it will mean that you miss some of the course related talks!  For more information on the conference click here

Fees for standard rooms (shared bathrooms) are £210 for OUPS members or £225 for non members. Ensuite facilities are available for an additional £60 and these rooms also have their own tea/coffee making facilities. The fee includes all meals, including Friday and Saturday night dinner, tea/coffee and biscuits at break times, extensive handouts, welcome drink on Friday night, Saturday night disco. There are no additional costs involved (except for drinks at the bar!). Non-residential places are available for a reduction of £50, all meals are still included.

Some of the things previous students have said about the Mini Summer Schools:

‘An excellent weekend. Extremely well organised. Knowledgeable tutors and friendly atmosphere. It is nice to have the opportunity to meet some of the authors of the chapters.’

A fantastic weekend. Thank you so much for the time and energy invested in these weekends. It is such a highlight of the academic year. I'm so glad I have invested in this weekend. I suspect it will help me achieve a higher grade.'

'I enjoy these weekends immensely. Being able to talk to the tutors and other students is invaluable in my opinion.'

'Brilliant weekend, real value for money. Highly recommended'

‘It is inspiring to have lecturers who are so enthusiastic about their subject. It brings social psychology to life in a way that, with the best will in the world, the books don’t.’

Excellent. Was feeling overwhelmed with the course materials and the weekend has helped to clarify a number of issues. An absolute must!!’
