Welcome to the London Region of the Open University Psychological Society (LOUPS)!

We are delighted to announce that we now have a new committee for the London Region and we are currently discussing ideas for events that we can run for you. London is an important region for OUPS as many of our members come from that area so we are pleased that we have been able to keep the region active. We are always looking for new people to come onto the committee to help us organise our events. If you think you might be interested do get in touch to find out more.

We hope to be able to offer a variety of events for students living and working around the London area, including course overview days, day conferences and social events.

What plans do we have for the year ahead?

On 30th January 2010 we are holding a Day Conference on 'Mental Health and Psychology'. We have an excellent line up of speakers who are all experts in the field of mental health:  Dr Thomas Bak; Professor Richard Bentall; Professor Neil Frude; Dr Claire Henderson. This conference is open to everyone and is a 'must' for anyone interested or involved in the area of mental health. Click here for more information on this conference and for booking details.

On 1st May 2010 we are running our course overview days for SD226, DD303 and DD307. These days have been very popular with students in the past. They aim to provide a framework for the whole course looking at key concepts and themes. They really do help to 'make the penny drop' and make everything fit into place! We have a group of very experienced and popular tutors and course writers taking the day and it is also a useful way of meeting other students doing the various courses. In 2009 our Course Overview day was sold out before the event so if you want to come to one in the future don't leave it too long to book!

On 1st July 2010 we are holding a Mid- Summer social event, following the success of the event we held just before Christmas. The evening offers you a chance to enjoy a drink and meet with other OU psychology students as well as listening to a lighthearted talk from a guest speaker. Our speaker this time will be Dr Frederic Vallee-Tourangeau who will be speaking on 'Intelligence & Creativity'. Do come along and join us but don't leave to too late to book as last year we sold out before the night! 

On 30th October 2010 we will be holding a Careers Day in Central London. This is something that has been asked for by a great many students. We already have an Occupational and a Forensic Psychologist signed up and we are currently in the process of finalising both a Clinical and an Academic/Research psychologist to come and talk to you. These practising psychologists will tell you about  their own experiences so that you can get a feel for the sort of work involved in their specialisation and the routes into these careers. For more information on the programme and booking details click on 'Careers Day' above or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are currently compiling an electronic mailing list of interested students to allow us to keep you up to date with what is happening in LOUPS so that you get early warning of events and dates. We know that studying with the OU can feel quite isolated at times so we hope our events help to create a sense of belonging to  a student community. However, we recognise that social events are also an important side of student life! We hope to run several social events in Central London during the year. In addition for the last four years or so I have been running a pubmeet for OU psychology students in South West London on the last Thursday of the month. If you are interested in coming along just drop me an email and I will give you the details. We hope to meet many of you at the LOUPS events over the next year.
