About the event
E219 Consolidation Weekend
E219 is a fascinating module but contains a vast amount of information and sometimes it can feel that you are getting a little overwhelmed by all the material and are unable to do it justice. The key to getting to grips with the module is to be able to draw all the elements together and identify links so that it makes sense as a whole. In the past many OU courses included residential schools at the halfway point and these helped enormously to bring together all the information and thus enhance understanding.
The OUPS Consolidation Weekend aims to fill this gap by offering you a residential weekend where you can focus totally on E219. It draws together material from across the module to take an in-depth look at some of the key topics, providing an overview of the material, exploring difficult concepts and examining key themes and links. Thus, it will help you understand how the material all fits together. It will provide you with the understanding and knowledge of the module that is necessary to help you move forward at this midway stage. By integrating the different elements and methods this weekend builds a more coherent foundation for writing high quality TMAs and EMA.
Timetable
The provisional timetable is as follows:
Friday:
7:45 -9:30pm Session 1. Overview: Key changes at each age across the five themes (Alan)
Saturday:
9:00 -10:30am: Session 2: Development of Attachment from early childhood adolescence (Janet)
11:00 -12:30pm: Session 3: Development of Representation from early childhood to adolescence (Alan)
2:00 -3:30pm: Session 4.: Key skills underpinning top class assigments (Janet)
4:00 -5:30pm: Session 5: Development of identity from early childhood to adolescence (Alan)
Sunday:
9:00 -10:30am: Session 6: Development of Emotion from early childhood to adolescence (Janet)
11:00 -12:30pm: Session 7: Producing a high quality EMA (Alan)
1:30 -3:00pm: Session 8: Development of Communication from early childhood to adolescence (Alan)
It is very important to get to grips with the material early in the module to help you with your TMAs and give you a good foundation for when you start your EMA, when your increased understanding will make this so much easier. At approximately the halfway point of your module it is the ideal time to start looking at links and themes and think about how all the themes fit together. Many students have said that this weekend helps them suddenly understand what the module is all about as it all clicks into place.
Please note that we cannot give answers or advice on the actual assessed work (TMAs and EMA) that is set in the current presentation of the module.
What does the weekend offer?
A series of discussions, seminars and lectures provides a broad look at the topics covered in this module including conceptual overviews, identifying major themes and links and generally pulling the material together and bringing it to life. It offers a full programme of eight talks, running from Friday evening (registration from 3pm; dinner at 6pm and evening lecture at 8pm) until Sunday tea time (last lecture finishes at 3.00pm). As well as covering module related topics and study skills, the sessions also allow students the opportunity of acquiring a better understanding and overview of the material as a whole and discussing any difficulties with the tutors. In addition it is a chance to meet up with other students studying E219.
The weekend represents excellent value for money. The accommodation is in management conference facilities with ensuite bedrooms. The cost for the whole weekend is inclusive of all meals, including Friday night and Saturday night dinner. There are no extra costs involved (except for drinks at the bar!). As well as your room and all meals this includes refreshments at break times, extensive handouts which are only available to attendees, eight lectures and a welcome drink on Friday night. Member discounts apply and non-residential places are available for a reduced price with all meals still included. Please contact us for details if you are interested in this option.
Extensive handouts will be provided online for each of the E219 lectures. These handouts are only available to those attending the weekend.
Joining instructions and handouts
Timetables, joining instructions and handouts will be sent out in the week before the event
Tutors
Tutors for the weekend are Janet Simpson and Alan Pechey. Both are experienced and popular tutors who are very approachable:
- Dr Alan Pechey has been teaching OU psychology courses for over 20 years. He is currently a tutor for both E219 and DE200; but has tutored for many years on OU child development and cognitive psychology courses and is a popular tutor at OUPS Weekends. He has assisted in some course writing and has been an OU exam marker. He has an MA (in cognitive development) and a PhD (looking at human memory) from Cambridge University. Aside from his OU teaching, he worked for many years as a consultant in Organisational Psychology; advising organisations (e.g. Barclaycard, Scotland Yard, local government) on how to adapt to new technology; how to change work practices and how to present information more effectively. Alan is a very engaging speaker, with a passion for psychology and students find his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm highly motivating.
- Janet Simpson has been teaching with the OU for thirteen years. She currently teaches on E219, DE200, DD210, E102, DD102 and D120. Janet also marks E219 EMA scripts. Janet has extensive experience of teaching psychology from GCSE to undergraduate level, with a specific focus on helping students to acquire effective study skills, including critical thinking. As an ex OU mature student, Janet is passionate about lifelong learning, having gained an MSc, and a BSc (Hons) in psychology as well as an MA and a BA (Hons) in English. All studied with the OU. This has given her insight into the student experience. In the early days of her first degree in psychology, Janet worked full-time as a Rheumatology Nurse specialist, lecturing and delivering workshops to patients, nurses and doctors. Janet has a particular interest in childhood trauma and resilience, and is currently exploring this from a psychoanalytic perspective, with a view to developing this into a PhD proposal.

What to expect
The lectures are conducted in management conference seminar rooms within the University campus, and you will have been provided with a timetable of talks and lecture notes before you arrive.
You can choose how you spend your time. If you book the residential package then you will have a very comfortable ensuite room in management conference facilities complete with bedding, towels, a hairdryer, coffee-making facilities and desk. Wifi is also included. The training centre has a small exercise room within the buliding and you also have complimentary access to the gym and pool on campus, so if you do need to relax then there is the option to do so.
The welcome drinks and psychology book stall are both excellent places to meet the tutors and other students. Our OUPS committee member will also introduce themselves so you'll know who to contact if you have any questions. You can enjoy your meals with a group of students in the comfortable dining room. The food is fresh, healthy catering, and there is something to entice everyone.
Finally, whilst most students leave exhausted from the learning and socialising, they comment that it is such a worthwhile weekend, and we see many of them each year as they progress their studies!
